How To Insert Photo Into Template

by Greg
(Glade Hill VA US)

Q: How do I easily insert a photo into a template and get it to fit without being distorted? (pse equivalent of clipping mask) thanks.

A: I'm going to make some assumptions to answer your question.

When you say template I'll assume you mean another Photoshop Elements image that you want to place your photo into. I'm also going to assume that by distorted you mean disproportionate.

  1. Have your template open in Elements. Then go to the File menu and choose Open…. Navigate to your new photo and click Open.

  2. Go up to the Select menu and choose All. Now go to the Edit menu and choose Copy. Close that photo.

Go to your Template Image and choose Paste from the Edit menu. Your new image will be added to your Template as a new Layer, which you can see in the Layers palette.

  3. Make the Move tool active by clicking on it in the Toolbox. Now go up to the Options bar and make sure that Show Bounding Box is checked.

  4. Hover your cursor over one of the four corner points until you get the diagonal double sided arrow icon and drag your mouse to resize it proportionately. Once you get it to the size you want click on the green arrow below it to commit to the change.

That should do it for you Greg.

Now if any of the assumptions I made at the beginning are wrong and you had something else in mind use the Comments link below to clarify. I will be happy to try to help you.

Until next time,
Rick
