Q: I received the following question on my twitter page:
@ps_elements Could you tell me how to create a burnt edge with PSE?

A: Here's a super-quick way if you have Photoshop Elements 6
or newer:

Duplicate the Background Layer by pressing Control+J (Mac:Cmd+J).

Go under the Filter menu and choose Correct Camera Distortion…

When the Dialog box opens uncheck Show Grid near the bottom of box.

Under the Vignette area move the Amount slider to the left until you get the edge you like. That's all there is to it.

There are other ways to get a burnt edge effect that give you a bit more control. But if this gives you the look you want, it's a quick and easy way to go.

Readers: If any of you have a solution to this or any other problem you see posted here, please leave a comment.

Your participation and help is appreciated. I obviously don' t have all the answers :~/

Thank you so much for posting this! So easy! Looking forward to reading more of your tutorials as I'm just starting to learn how to use PE. Would love an even more dramatic affect with darkening edges, textures, changing to a "vintage" look, etc. Thank you again! I'm sure you'll see me here a lot!

A More Intense Effect
by: Rick

Thanks for visiting and the kind words. Here's a tutorial for a more dramatic and intense burnt edge using Photoshop Elements. I will soon post this on the Photoshop Elements Tutorials page on this website.

This method gives you the option to go in and adjust the size of the effect. And it can be used with older versions of Elements.

I hope you can make use of this technique.

Hi Rick. Just wanted to say a big thank you for all of the great information contained in your tutorials. I've stumbled around PS9 for quite a few weeks now and can't believe quite how easily you explain the different aspects. It's way, way more powerful than I imagined and now, for me, usable too. A big, big thank you from the UK. - Guy
